Who came up with this complicated procedure for restarting an ipad...?

Whoever came up with this three-step procedure for restarting an iPad clearly has never tried to explain anything to an older relative. Three unmarked buttons that must be pressed in a certain order and different length... Where do you even start to explain that over the phone...?!

Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button until your iPad restarts.

Clearly, Apple are entirely responsible for the design of their products.

As the iPad doesn’t have a physical battery on/off switch, a method to trigger a forced-restart had to be devised using the available physical pushbuttons. The sequence and buttons that must be used differ between devices; those that have a physical Home button differ from those that don’t. This difference in button-sequence is consistent for iPad and iPhone - with and without a physical Home button.

The best advice that can be offered to address your issue is to initially familiarise the individual, with whom you are attempting to provide help via telephone, with the three physical buttons. Perhaps assign the physical buttons a number or letter (1, 2 and 3 - or A, B and C) in the sequence that the buttons must be pressed. As such, you can completely forget the names of the buttons and their normal functions.

While the diagram above is visual - it is intended as an aid to explain relative button positions. The revised process…:

Press and quickly release button #1 - then press and quickly release button #2 - then press and hold button #3 until your iPad restarts. Release button #3 when the Apple logo appears.
