In Disk Utility it should say what format the drive is.

In the Disk Utility app  on your Mac, choose View > Show All Devices.

Note: If you’re checking your startup disk or startup volume, restart your computer in macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility in the macOS Utilities window, then click Continue. If you check your startup volume (Macintosh HD), make sure you also check your data volume (Macintosh HD - Data). If it has the drive split as with one having + Data added then it's APFS which earlier OSes cannot use.

Not sure about the original poster, but I don't recall it giving me formatting options. I just followed the directions to erase the disc before I trade it in, and then it froze. I had to hard restart it, used command+R, am now trying to re-install OS X, and I have no options. In the disk utility, I can see my 500gb SDD, but when I go to select a startup disk, also nothing there. I've also run the first aid on it. Nothing said anything was wrong.
