How to turn off find my iphone from a phone you no longer have?

I turned in a phone to Verizon, and they are saying I did not turn off the "find my phone". When I use the Find my Phone app from my other devices, it does not show up as one of my devices anymore. I also factory reset the device. How can I turn off the "find my phone" when I no longer have the device in hand?
