Voice Memo quality is muffled with Airpods Pro (1st gen)

Hi

I am experiencing muffled audio when recording a voice memo/voice note (mostly in the beginning of the recording) even when setting the mic to only the left/right Airpod.

I have attempted to resolve the issue by resetting my AirPods Pro and regularly cleaning them, but the issue persists. The audio quality is fine during phone/video calls.

Can you please provide assistance in resolving this issue?

Hi there r00sterZA,

If this is only happening with the Voice Memos app, let's first test if this also happens when using the built-in microphone of your device to record a voice memo or when the AirPods Pro are connected to another device with the Voice Memos app. This will allow us to isolate if the microphones of your AirPods or the Voice Memos app is responsible for this behavior. Here's how to do this if you need it: Make a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone

Let's ensure your device is fully updated as well since this installs feature improvements and bug fixes that can resolve issues like this. If you're using an iPhone, these steps from Update your iPhone or iPad show how to back up and update:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

Thanks!

r00sterZA,

If you’ve isolated the issue to your AirPods and it happens on all devices you use your AirPods with, and all devices are up to date as well as your AirPods firmware, then it sounds like connecting with Apple Support may be the next step to explore service options.

About firmware updates for AirPods

Find your AirPods firmware version
Firmware updates are delivered periodically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Because firmware updates are delivered automatically, you don't need to update your AirPods.

To use your iPhone or iPad to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the Info button next to the name of your AirPods. Scroll down to the About section to find the firmware version.

To use your Mac to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of macOS. Press and hold the Option key while choosing Apple menu  > System Information. Click Bluetooth, then look under your AirPods for the firmware version. With macOS Ventura, you can also choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Bluetooth, then click the Info button next to the name of your AirPods.

Latest firmware versions
• AirPods Pro (2nd generation): 5B58
• AirPods Pro (1st generation): 5B58
• AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation): 5B58
• AirPods Max: 5B58
• AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8
