I have a 2010 iMac, won't talk to my printer any more

Does anyone know workarounds to allow my iMac to print?

I have a 2010 iMac, 27" monitor. It's a beautiful machine and still does most everything I need it to do.

BUT, Problem: I have an older HP printer that worked fine, wirelessly, until recently. It still will print test pages etc from its own menu, so it's not that it died. However, I can't get it to print from the computer either wirelessly OR when a printer cable is attached. I already tried a brand new cable in case that was the problem, and it was not.

I tried to re-download printer drivers and it looks like the updated drivers are not compatible with the OS on my Mac. Can anyone help? I'd be willing to get a new printer (can't afford a new Mac) but I'm afraid a newer printer will be even less compatible.

Anyone have any solutions or workarounds? Thank you so very much in advance!!

There are two paths for that HP PhotoSmart D110 printer, USB, and Wi-Fi.

If you’re using the Wi-Fi path, this might be stale self-signed digital certificates needing re-generation.

It’s also an old printer; from 2009, if not earlier.

It lacks AirPrint support.

Per HP, here are the drivers that HP recommends:

Here’s the setup doc, including how to switch to from USB to Wi-Fi:

If you have tried both the 5.1.1 drivers and the HP Smart app, and tried a printer system reset, and all are failing, your last option before replacement is trying printer setup by Wi-Fi and IP address, and then failing that you’re probably headed for a replacement printer. (I can’t immediately tell from what HP what specs that printer model might have, and digging around at HP is more work.) What system are you running?

Is it an inkjet or laser printer?

Since it worked wirelessly previously give these a try in order as needed;

1 - Reset the Mac printing system to solve a problem and then try both wirelessly and with cable if needed.

2 - Go to the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane and remove the printer. Reboot and go back to the same preference pane and add it back and test.

3 - If you can get access to another computer see if it will work with cable or WiFi. If not then it may be the printer. How old is the printer? If it is wirless can your print from an iPhone? I know we can with our wireless printer.

Check whether the firmware needs an upgrade, yes. Upgrade it if not current.

Also check whether there’s a self-signed digital certificate loaded in the printer that needs to be re-generated.

Here’s an Epson that has a certificate error: Expired encryption certificate on epson p… - Apple Community

Whether and how that digital certificate might be implemented on an unspecified HP printer varies, and HP have nearly as many printer models as there are stars in the average galaxy. Find the admin manual for the printer, and search for “certificate”, etc.

I don´t know if a Firmware update will help, but it is a possibility?

You will generally want to apply the most recent firmware for any device, including a printer, yes.

f i have had, same problem, i will reset my Printer, and reinstall, the Printer!
I have do this some time and it helps!

If the printer is itself fully factory reset and the printer is then re-configured, I'd expect it would re-generate any self-signed certificates. Re-generation which would update the expiration date for the certificate. And that is all assuming that this is a certificate issue. Printers too often being malevolent creations, that's assumption is far from a certainty.

Almost the first thing I tried was downloading updated drivers for the printer.

As I explained in my original post, the HP drivers are not compatible with my Mac OS. The newest OS I can even consider upgrading to is High Sierra, and I'm already running Sierra (10.12.6).

I will try to find out about the "digital certificate" for the printer. It is an HP Photosmart D110 series inkjet printer.
