Forgot login and now recovery key required

Dear all,

I have a strange situation on my MacBook Pro (latest iOS installed)

  • I forgot the login ID created recently
  • When I request reset, I am asked to provide a recovery key

this is first time I hear of such a key and I have never set one up.

But now, what do I do? I am lost and I need my computer badly

Can you please help me out?

Hi GarageB,

Mac recovery keys are set up when you enable FileVault to encrypt your Mac startup disk. This extra layer of security is an optional feature that must be turned on by someone using the computer. It works by requiring your Mac login password to be entered in order to access your user account, and you cannot set any accounts to automatically login.

If you have forgotten your user account password while FileVault is enabled and need to reset your password, you will need to have your recovery key available. This key was provided at the time FileVault was set up, and cannot be recovered or reset.

For more information on FileVault and using a recovery key to reset your Mac password, please review the following Apple Support articles:

Cheers!
