iOS 16.2 Update Problems

Hey folks, I switched to Apple last year and got the iphone 13 pro max. My last iphone was the 4S soo i'm pretty new in the game.

After i updated to 16.2 my iphone is a complete mess. I'm a developer and I built my own home automation system which i used to control with the shortcuts app. I made shortcuts which send get requests to a server which then handles the processing of the devices. Works like a charme and still works now BUT, Siri doesn't work anymore in shortcuts. She simply doesn't recognise the commands anymore and tries to search in web. Example shortcut: studio lights off She understands "studio light off" or "studio lites off" she behaves like she's deaf or stupid or whatever. When I click the shortcut by hand, it works like a charm. But siri doesn't work anymore. I tried uninstalling the shortcuts app several times, I tried renaming the shortcuts to different names and even leaving them on the new names for at least 48 hours as apple support recommended to me.

next thing: Whatsapp. It crashes and hangs up randomly soo many times, I try to record a voice memo it doesn't work, i switch back to whatsapp from another app, and it's freezed, i can't scroll or click anything until i wait for like 5-10 seconds. This also happened to instagram but only once so far. I'm really really mad right now because I switched to apple, cz i was sick of bugs and I wanted a phone that just works. They kept telling me get an iphone it never has any problems. I'm ****** off. Apple Support told me they have never heard of these issues before YEAH SURE it's me 😅 I thought all iphones are the same? i don't run any third party apps, just a normal iphone with social media and shortcuts app. never dropped my phone always handled it with care. i'm so fed up I just want a phone with no bugs. last thing I wanna do is reset my device so please someone tell me you got the same problems with 16.2

iOS 16.0, 16.2 have been the worse releases so far from what I can see and this may be down to the team at Apple silently updating apps and core services to use the new SwiftUI API. From what I can tell (I'm a long standing iOS Developer) iOS 16+ has issues maintaining state and links to other API's when views are redrawn resulting in broken functionality. This also carries over to apps in the background which crash or hang when brought to the foreground.

Speech recognition has always been hit and miss in previous versions of iOS and required extra configurations by app developers to persist session etc. It appears from your issues that perhaps iOS 16 is too much for Speech Recognition.

In my opinion the team need to rollback to iOS 15 core code and work out the fundamental stability issues before proceeding with this single OS path they're heading down. It's great to see this direction but when latest and older devices are suffering the process needs aggressively looking at to identify broken pipelines.

iOS 16.2 also broke the voice input function. I have a shortcut that calculates a number based on a value input into the device. The shortcut runs fine when I manually type in a number, but if I ask Siri to run the shortcut, the shortcut then goes into an infinite loop of asking for the input value. I hope this gets corrected ASAP as this shortcut is very important to my ability to manage my health care.

For future reference, please, please do not upgrade on launch day to the latest operating system update on any platform (Mac, iPhone, iPad) and nor for a good few weeks. This is so that you can check the kinds of issues people are having with the update.

Exceptions to this rule are: if your device is not your main device and it doesn't matter if it gets bricked/broke; you have a backup and you must have the new features the new version provides or you desperately need to run an app that requires the latest OS to run essential features.

Just bear in mind early adopters run the highest risk of being screwed.

I'm still running iPadOS 15.7.2 on 22nd Jan 2023 when 16.2 is available. I'm not touching v16 until at least its third or fourth patch.

Yes, I'm running the risk of potential security holes that haven't been patched, but there's less chance of me being inconvenienced by a hack than an Apple update. Plus, I'm cautious in websites I visit and files/links in emails.

Couldn’t disagree more with this assessment unless your phone is a mission critical item. Most people’s phone is not mission critical and. Would be ok with update after and private and public beta period. I have owned every iPhone since the 3g and have always updated when the new Os is available (never beta). Sure, there are some little things here and there but overall I think it a bit of chicken little to say that bad things will happen if you upgrade to the first version of a née release.

iPhone 13 has become a piece of junk after IOS 16.3 upgrade:( here are the list of issues :

  • my ringer does not work any more for all incoming calls
  • if I attend a call or make a call , I can’t hear the person on the other side
  • none of the videos run (fb / insta / YouTube etc)
  • safari just hangs and the screen freezes I use google search

this is my worst experience with iPhone.

Well, let me reassure you that you are not the only one. Ever since I did this last update my phone has been completely screwed up worse than any other time when I’ve done updates and I’ve had apples as long as I can remember. I don’t know what in the world they are doing at Apple, but they need to get back to The old days of quality. When I use Siri now, it’s like I’m speaking a foreign language it’s not even close to working correctly whether I am trying to use it for a text, email or Google search.

come on Apple get it together we all spend way too much money on these devices to have it screw up so badly!!!
