iOS remote app volume control not working

Remote app used to work perfectly. But after recent updates it no longer has the ability to change the volume through the mobile device’s volume buttons.

I’ve tested it using several different devices and AppleTVs. One is connected to a media amp receiver and other AppleTVs are plugged directly into the TV. In every instance the volume functionality has stopped working in the iOS remote app. I’ve changed no settings, using the same inputs, and made sure AppleTV, receivers, and TVs are set to allow HDMI control. I’ve even gone into the AppleTV remote app settings and selected “forget this device,” and re-paired my iPhone. Everything is up to date. Still… nothing.

Nothing is worse than a useful feature suddenly made unavailable. Incredibly frustrating and a waste of time trying to troubleshoot. Does anyone have a solve for this?

If you can't set up the Apple TV Remote

Try these steps. After each step, see if you still need help.

1) Check that your iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV. On your iOS or iPadOS device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Network.

2) Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is updated to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, and your Apple TV is updated to the latest version of tvOS.

3) Restart your Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV. Also try restarting your iPhone or iPad.

4) If you still can't set up the Apple TV Remote, contact Apple Support.
