‘Primary iPhone’ setup

Hi, I have an iPhone 6s, I’m concerned about losing it or it breaking, so I bought another 6s as a mirrored backup, to use the same ID, ready to use if my other phone is lost/dies.

My question is:

If I use ‘Quick Start’ to transfer my current phone data/apps to the second one, how can I keep the current phone as my ‘primary phone’ and have the second phone as a backup?

Is my ‘primary phone’ whichever phone has my SIM card? Or is there more to it than that?

Thanks

Your working phone is whichever one has the SIM in it. Transferring data from the old phone to the new phone has no effect on the old phone. As long as it has the SIM in it, it's the one that will work. But, you don't even need to do that. As long as you back up your phone every day (as you should), if something happens to it, you can restore the back up to the spare phone.

Make sure that you keep the spare phone at least 50% charged. You don't want the battery to drain completely and then sit in that state. That can destroy the battery. Charge it up and check it once a month or so. As long as it's turned off, the battery should drain very slowly.

Thanks v much. I do use cloud backup every day so that’s good to know. I just think it’d be quicker to have a duplicate ready to go, if anything bad happened.

The reason I mentioned the daily back up is that, if you do a Quick Transfer today and then don't need the phone for six months, the data on it is going to be a bit out of date. But if you have the back ups, you can always, at that point, opt to use them (or not).

Sorry, pressed ‘best answer’ on my reply! Can’t seem to change it.

No worries! The thank you post is much appreciated.
