Gopro footage
Newbie to fcp, why is my GoPro footage so small in the viewer and how do I hide the big black viewer to the left of it?

Well, I downloaded your image and rotated it in Preview... it was really uncomfortable to look at it in your post.
The problem is that your Viewer is too small - because of the 360º viewer next to it. You may notice that it says 10% at the top - that is much it is scaled down, to fit the available space.
You need to close the 360º viewer: View->Show in Viewer->360º
Then your actual Viewer will take over that area.

My guess is you've enabled viewing angles for a multicam. To turn that off, in the View popup menu at the far right, uncheck Angles.
Since you're a newbie to FCP, you'd probably find these two free tutorials super helpful.
Steve at Ripple Training, 60 minute FCP tutorial overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqUP7Zgeuck
Izzy Video tutorials. Slightly older so the UI looks different but the concepts are still correct. https://youtu.be/_jvyrnQpR1E?list=PLp5SAgbM8S87n1qvv34-PAU2zMHLlXyfb
A big +1 on these excellent tutorials.
Your project appears to be a 360º project. Is that what you are trying to do?
And PLEASE... to take a screenshot, do NOT use your phone or camera. Just press Command-Shift-3 (for the whole screen) or Command-Shift-4 and drag to select the area you want. The screenshots are saved to your desktop by default.
It is far quicker and easier for you... and for our necks!!! 😎
