Time Machine error 45 - MacOS Catalina

My late 2012 iMac can't run anything more recent than Catalina, and Apple has yet to produce a 27" replacement on Apple silicon.

My Time Machine backups were working happily, but stopped a few months ago. The network and disc are OK, because my M1 Macbook Air works happily with time machine.

However, my iMac fails with error 45.

The solution given here was to delete the backup, and start again. I've done that, and it starts creating a new backup directory that all looks fine - but it then fails with error 45, and carries on saying it is still waiting to complete the first backup.

I'm wondering what is really upsetting it. Is there a lock file somewhere? Should I be looking for some other error in the log files?

I know Catalina is out of support, but I'd be grateful for any help to resolve this.

I have found the problem - it was a hardware fault on the drive.

I have now re-formatted the drive, which should have spared any faulty tracks, and it is working again.

whether this is wise is another question. The faulty track(s) is clearly a warning that the drive is not in a good state. However, it is less than a year old, and a 10TB drive, so I am hoping this is part of the settling in process, and the error was because a faulty track was in a directory.

With any lick it’ll give me a few more years of service.

Thank you very much - yes, I have seen these posts, and searched the Apple Community.

I'm using an external drive on an Apple Time Capsule. As I said, it was working perfectly with Catalina for many months, and is still working for my Macbook Air M1.

I have only recently started getting this error, and only on the iMac.

I have tried deleting the backup and starting again - and it creates the directories on the volume, and backs up many files - but then fails with this error 32. This is what the directory on the external drive looks like:
