Can't open old Garageband projects...

Hi guys

A while ago i accidentally deleted 500 Garageband projects i had on an external drive. A friend of mine was able to recover them all... nearly 80Gb of it.

All these projects were done between 2015 and 2018 ? Or so..

However now when i try to open them, GarageBand opens a dialog box asking if i want to save them and if i click yes it then tells me it can't open the project.

I've also tried importing the .aif files from the Media folder of each project to Music but nothing happens..

Does anyone know how i should go about it ?

Many thanks in advance.

OK, i went through all the steps suggested and now what i get is this :

1 - i click on the .band file and this window pops up urging me to save the file.

I did...

2 - and then this comes up :

this does baffle me a bit since these were all created/saved in GB...

When i click OK then this comes up

If i right click on the .band file and select "show package content", i then click on the "media" folder there are a few .aif files, i right click on them then select "get info" and it shows they have X number of MB , tried click and drag into GB or even Logic and all i get is this

So i googled up "install Logic 7.2.1 in Monterey" and of course, nothing relevant comes up.

Should i buy a really old Mac to be able to do this or.....?

These are like 500 and some multitrack recordings i did that i really want to keep and it's so frustrating as i thought they'd be automatically updated each time GarageBand was updated - or did i actually deleted them much earlier than i thought ?

Again a million thanks in advance if anyone can shed some light here

Hi there nuno1959,

Please check out the steps below, as it may help resolve this issue opening those GarageBand projects:

"Restart your Mac

Choose Restart from the Apple menu .

Update GarageBand

Choose Apple menu  > App Store, then click Updates in the toolbar. If a GarageBand update is available, click the Update button to download and install it.

Test with a new project

You can create a new project and test to check if the issue is with your project or with the GarageBand app.

  1. If GarageBand is open, quit the app.
  2. Open GarageBand and choose File > New.
  3. Choose Empty Project in the New Project window.
  4. Add audio files or Apple Loops to the new project.
  5. Try to recreate the issue you were having. For example, if the project you're having an issue with uses a particular third-party plug-in, add it to the test project. If the problem reappears, the plug-in might be damaged or might need to be updated.

Test GarageBand with a new user account

Create another user account on your Mac, then try to recreate the issue in the new user account. If the issue doesn't occur in the new user account, settings in the original account might be causing the issue."

Those steps, and additional troubleshooting steps, can be found in this article: If GarageBand isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know how those steps go or if you've already tried those.

Take care.
