IPhone headphones with Ipod Nano only half working

I have the Iphone headphones and using them with the latest nano. When I plug them into the Ipod only the right earphone is audible. I can only hear the left piece when the volume is almost up to the max but when I put the headphones into my laptop both sides work fine. Has anyone else had this issue before? Thanks
