Older iPhones and use of Find My

I have an iPhone XR running ios 16.2. Everything I read says it should show up on Find My even if it is off. It has 50% battery based on the quick connection that was made 3 hours ago. I called the phone and then it got powered off again.

My specific question is does Find My work when powered off with older phones? It's marked as lost and I got a ping when it was powered on. However, I need a more current ping in order for police to accompany me to the location. I've been advised not to approach people who may have my phone since they probably don't want to give it back. :(

If the powered off Find My feature does not work with older phones then there needs to be specific info on which newer models have that capacity. Nothing I've read says its only for newer phones.

I'm using the Find My app and looking in iCloud as well.

Thanks for any help, though.

The only devices that are trackable when they are turned off are the iPhone 12 and newer.

Older devices do not support that.

A while back, around the release of iOS 15, it was indicated that iPhone 11 and later with the U1 UWB can be tracked while off, when that tracking feature is enabled.

This was the related message displayed at power off:

iPhone Remains Findable After Power Off

Find My helps you locate this iPhone when it is lost or stolen, even when it is in power reserve mode or when powered off.

I don’t see that iPhone device list included in any current Apple Find My documentation, so I don’t know if the Find My tracking mechanism is now available across all current iPhone models with current iOS (and when powered off), or if the documentation for this hardware limit was erroneously dropped.

Here’s the old list:

From that list, this should not work. From current Apple documentation, I’m not sure.

Hello javelina187,

If you've lost your iPhone, see related steps in: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

If the iPhone is off and not powered on, it wouldn't be able to reflect its location in the Find My app. As explained here: Locate a device in Find My on iPhone

About locating a device

- You can use Find My on your iPhone to see the location of your device on a map and play a sound on it to help you find it. If the device is online, you see the location of the device. If the device is offline, you see the location of the device the last time it went online or connected to the Find My network.

If the device is no longer online, it will show it's last location, if possible.

We'd recommend using the following: If Find My is offline or not working

And continuing to work with your local Law Enforcement on their next steps from here.

We hope this helps out, take care.
