Updating older iMac

Friend gave me her older Mac (2008) and it only has OS 10.13. I need to update it to update my apps but not sure how to do that. I'm a newbie to Apple. Any suggestions?

It is a 2008, Early 2009, or Late 2009?

A 2008 and Early 2009 cannot run macOS 10.13 High Sierra, only up to OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

A Late 2009 cannot run anything newer than macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
