CarPlay mic doesn't work for calls or texts

Have been using CarPlay with my iPhone for years via wired connection with no problems. I have a mic installed in my car. About 2 months ago, whenever I go to make a phone call, when the call actually starts the mic suddenly stops working and the other person can't hear me. When I go to send a text, when siri asks me "What do you want to say?", when I answer the mic doesn't work and the phone can't hear me. The mic works FINE when I tell siri to make a call or I tell siri to send a text (or when I tell siri to play music or whatever), but when the call actually starts the mic suddenly doesn't work and when I'm asked WHAT text I want to send the mic suddenly doesn't work. I would think this has to be a CarPlay issue. Anyone else having this?

Note: I am currently using an iPhone 13 Pro Max, all software is updated.

Someone in another forum said they had this issue and it turned out to be a problem with the microphone that was installed in the car. (I guess the idea is when you first say "Hey Siri" your phone mic picks that up but then for the follow up the non-phone car microphone is listening, and that mic is not working.) I am gonna have my installed car microphone checked out in the next couple weeks and see if it is broken and whether that can solve the issue. Will post again when I find out.

Hey there SteveLA,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. For the best steps that can help with troubleshooting issues with CarPlay not working as expected, give the steps listed in the following resource a try: If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support

First, make sure that your country or region supports CarPlay and that your car supports CarPlay. If you're unsure if your car supports CarPlay, contact the vehicle manufacturer.

Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps — checking CarPlay after each step:
1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
- If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
- If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled under Settings > Wi-Fi and Settings > Bluetooth.
2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display.
3. Restart your iPhone and your car.
4. Make sure that Siri is on.
5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Take care!

Hi Steve and Algy.

I got the exact same issue.

I am using Iphone 13 and Iphone 10 with IOS 16.2. The problem persists with both of them and appears when I use the CARPLAY.

It doesn't matter if the Radio, Spotify or other music apps are used at the moment of voice call command - the outcome is always the same.

Whenever I press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel SIRI comes out on the main screen.

Then I ask her to call someone (doesn't matter who) and immediately all sound is blocked - the number is being dialed BUT the person

cannot hear me and I cannot hear him. Then I cannot use radio, media, apps or whatever. I have to turn off the vehicle for couple

of minutes to reset the sound problem.

If I go into the CARPLAY menu with the remote control knob (NOT with the Voice assistant from the steering wheel ) and try to call someone - the phone and sound works normally and I can speak without issues.

I tried to change the cables and the iphones but it is always the same.

I own another car with CARPLAY and I can dial with voice recognition with the same Iphone without problems.

If I use bluetooth connection everything works just fine with calls.

The problematic car is Mercedes and have already contacted the dealer who contacted the Germans respectively. They came back with some questions but still no solution. I will keep you guys posted. Hopefully this will all got resolved quickly…
