Hi there, we have a RAID 1 on our Mac Mini - one of the drives showed damaged/missing, we tried first aid which didn't work, so just replaced the drive with a new one. We still get the same error. We've tried several different drives (all reformatted), restarted AND deleted the whole RAID and started again and yet it always shows one as damaged/missing.
Does anyone have any ideas?!?

Software raids are not reliable, especially using multiple enclosures.
option 1, purchase and use a real dual or quad drive enclosure that supports raid.

option 2, use cloning software like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper and clone the external drives.

What year model Mac mini on what macOS version is it running?
What kind of enclosure are the drives installed in?
The enclosure may have a bad chip or connector.

Just two 4TB external hard drives connected by USB C. We've tried multiple different hard drives and always get the same error - just one saying missing/damaged
Definitely concur with @den.thed. If you are going to do RAID, the drives need to be contained within a single enclosure. Even then you may at times find that software RAID will break.
