Is portrait mode editing in iMovie possible?

In the Clips app you can easily edit in portrait mode. But it's missing features like dissolve between cuts and fadeout.

In iMovie I can edit portrait mode clips, but it's tedious. When you're done you have to go through a bunch of stuff to get a portrait movie saved, like:

  1. One-by-one select each cut and "pinch to zoom."
  2. After saving the video you have to edit it in Photos to get the movie to be normal portrait size, otherwise it's a stunted short height video.

It's weird that Clips allows you to directly edit full screen-size videos but the more feature-filled iMovie doesn't. Am I missing something in iMovie that would let me edit portrait clips more easily and directly?
