Opening zipfile for free software (VSC)

Hi - I am starting doing a web designer course and embarrassingly failing at the first hurdle which is to download Visual Studio Code from the internet. I followed the instructions for Mac, and it's given me a zip file. I've transferred that from browser to desktop, but when I double click on it, it looks like it's opening (through Archive Utility) but nothing happens.

I found Archive Utility in the Core Service Applications folder and it just says 'last opened' and the time I did the double click.

What am I doing wrong?

Any chance you have "Desktop & Documents Folders" enabled in System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options…

Check in the iCloud Drive > Desktop in the Finder Sidebar.

Hah! Funnily enough, while going into the drive in Finder to check free space, I could see that the application was sitting there so I have it now! I had just expected it to be visible on the 'screen' desktop where I had dragged it from the download folder and it wasn't, only under Desktop in the Finder menu.

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. I downloaded "VSCode-darwin-universal.zip" from https://code.visualstudio.com/download, dbl-clicked the file and it extracted to "Visual Studio Code".

Thanks for the quick reply. I went down a real rabbit-hole following that one up. I didn't have Desktop & Documents Folders checked, so I added it, but it went to a storage upgrade payment screen next. The Apple ID in there is my husband's (I think going back many years to when he set up iTunes - he doesn't even have that email address any more). So can't progress on that one for the moment as he is away.

Might it be a storage issue? I can't see why that would affect a zip file. Actually I use One Drive now for cloud storage as it just came with the Microsoft Office.

You're welcome. I didn't mean to imply you should have Desktops & Documents enabled. I was posing the question as a possible explanation. To be honest I'm not sure what the issue might be. If you had the zip file on the Desktop when you dbl-clicked it it should extract it to the Desktop.

Do you know how much free space you have left on the drive?

Ok thanks - when I double-click on it I don't get anything extracted. The pop-up just says it's expanding but then closes again and nothing additional showing. Don't know what to try now!
