Why do some users use “we” when they post here?

This is just out of curiosity, but as I thought that this is a forum where users help other users, it confuses me when some users use the noun “we” when they respond. It gives the impression that they’re somehow running this forum and are in an elevated position here, compared to us mere mortals. Are they?

They often open with something like: “we wish you welcome blablabla” which sounds a tad pretentious if they are just another user, especially when I find out that I’ve been active here longer than they have. They might be far mor3 knowledgeable, but it still looks odd.

Or perhaps they really are in a special position? I don’t know. Anybody does?

Interesting question indeed. I can only speak for my actions, but if I joined in a thread where other users had already chimed in, I would probably refer to myself as “we” as in “we are in agreement”. Or perhaps in a question where a user asked why Apple did something …… to which I might use the “we, the users here, would not know that. If it is one of the Community Specialists replying, they would probably use “We” as they are replying on behalf of Apple.

We do not have access to any Apple proprietary information or customer accounts. Would you prefer I respond by saying I do not have any access to Apple proprietary information or to customer accounts?

I don't understand the issue with using we. When I use we, I'm referring to this group. Am I using we incorrectly?

Ah, so that’s probably the answer then. They’re not normal users, but represent Apple. Are they Apple employees, perhaps?

What has been confusing me, is that I’ve often read that people from Apple rarely chime in here and that it’s just other users doing their best to be helpful. Then I’ve seen quite a few of these “we”-users lately, but if they represent Apple, it’s not odd at all, of course.

I believe you are completely correct. I will sometimes say things like, "If you explain in more detail what your problem is, perhaps we can help help you figure it out". I usually say that recognizing that I may not be the person who knows the answer.

There are times we can speak for other users here, especially in a statement of fact such as "We do not have access to any proprietary Apple information". Although I'm inclined personally to phrase it as, "No one here has access to Apple's proprietary information", it's an equally encompassing pronoun.

But, as the other reply here informed me; if they carry the title of Community Specialists, they speak on behalf of Apple, something I wasn’t aware of.

I believe I am correct when using we in these communities of users. We try to help each other. We often recommend solutions to non grammatical issues, for example: we often recommend a reboot, we often recommend not using a third party anti virus app, we often don't know the answer to a problem.

Perhaps it’s a cultural thing? I can only speak for myself, at least, and therefore I do not use “we” unless it’s strictly correct to do so. Maybe I just don’t feel that I belong to any kind of a community in here, aside from the fact that I’m human and that I happen to use the same brand of products which I assume everyone else do here.

I might recommend a reboot and I might recommend not using a third party anti virus app and I mightn’t know the answer to a problem, because I haven’t got a notion as to what you do or know, do I?

But well, that’s just me. I’m just a simple user, nothing more :)

And I’m not that often in here, only when I have a problem I can’t solve myself.

There have long been three versions of "we" in the English tongue:

  • the plural "we": My family went to the circus and we had a great time
  • the editorial "we": We feel that our readers should be outraged by the Monday nothgt action of the Council.
  • the Regal "we": We proclaim this date a day of celebration of our great victory over our enemies

I suspect you are seeing the editorial "we" here. This is a community, and many of us have been here a long time, enjoying the company of other members.

What you’re expressing is an opinion about usage. English is a lot more flexible than your 7th- grade English teacher and seventeenth-century prescriptive grammarians let on.

But of course it’s an opinion. My opinion as it were :) And yes, if you by your comment meant to indicate that English isn’t my native language, your assumption is indeed correct, although I don’t think that I rely too much on seventeenth-century prescriptive grammarians. I haven’t had the pleasure to know such animals, I’m afraid :)

And yes, it’s a very flexible language, but I just got curious and wanted to know why and my curiosity has been stilled. Looking at your profiles, I see that you obviously spend some considerable time here, most of you, if not all. Then it’s quite natural that you develop a sense of community, and hence, the “we” feels more natural for you, I assume.

Well, thank you for your contribution, all of you. I’ve become much wiser regarding this issue :)

Why do some users use “we” when they post here?
