Troubleshooting a Failing Screen:

Your Screen is Failing:

From what you have reported, your screen is apparently defective. So, It is time for a new screen. If you have not had this replaced, and it is covered under warranty, then it might be replaceable by Apple, free of charge --but that it Apple's call.

What to Try:

Perhaps this is a Faulty Device?:

How old is this Mac? Note that you have a one-year, out-of-the-box, limited-warranty with this. So, if it is covered under warranty, then see if you can get the screen replaced. Being faulty, it likely would be nothing on you. Ask Apple Support for a new screen.

Apple Contact Us Info:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there as Necessary
  • NOTE: Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, calls are taking a bit longer to get through. And, that makes sense, because many are at home working out-of-the-house or are taking classes over-the-web, this they have more time on their hands to contact Apple Support. So, it might take a bit to get through to Apple Support. But, just stay on the line, and someone will be with you :)

Sometimes, Mac doesn’t show any error message stating the real cause behind the gray screen. But you may find the Apple logo, a spinning globe, a folder with a question mark, or a prohibitory sign along with the gray screen. In any of the case, your Mac gets stuck, and you can’t skip the screen to move forward to the login screen.

The basic reasons behind the Mac Gray Screen of Death Error are:

1. A defective or unauthorized peripheral device causes your Mac to stall at the gray screen while waiting for the device to respond to the command.

2. Peripheral devices that don’t have an updated firmware can lead to Mac gray screen with circle slash.

3. A faulty startup drive might cause the Mac gray screen with no logo.

4. If you’ve installed any new program on your Mac and it’s not functioning correctly, it’ll cause Mac gray screen error.

However, there are multiple ways to try and fix the issue:

1. Disconnect All External Peripheral Devices

2. Use Disk Utility to Repair the Storage Drive

3. Start Up Mac By Using Safe Boot Mode

4. Reset NVRAM and PRAM to Fix the Issue

5. Use DIY Data Recovery Software to Salvage Mac Data

6. Reinstall macOS

Hope it will resolve your issue!
