Universal Control typing in upper and lower case letters

Typing on the iPad with my MacBook’s keyboard on universal control appears “LiKe ThIs HhHhHhH”.

A workaround I’ve found to is to hit the caps lock so that it locks it in either the upper case or lower case.

e.g. if caps lock = off, I start typing “AaAaA” with the last letter uppercase, and then hit caps lock = on, it starts typing in lower case.

It magically fixed itself a few weeks back, but restarting my iPad brought this problem back.

Did some research and this fixed the issue for me (MacBook Pro M1 13 inch, iPad Air 4th gen):

On Your iPad:

Go to SETTINGS > Accessibility > Keyboards > HARDWARE KEYBOARDS > turn Full Keyboard Access to ON

** Also (on the same page), SOFTWARE KEYBOARD > toggle Show Lowercase Keys to ON

Same thing just randomly started with my devices. I use my iPad Pro (2015) and Mac book and toggle between devices while studying when suddenly my typing alternated between upper and lower case letters every other letter!

Fixed: I went to Bluetooth connections and clicked “forget__ my Magic Keyboard” or wireless keyboard.

then I closed out of everything and rebooted my iPad- volume up, volume down and then hold lock button until Apple icon appeared and went black. Restarted my iPad and it seems to have gone back to normal for me!

best of luck!

Hey Everyone, I've found a solution!!!

I took 2 steps. I recommend doing the first one first and if that doesn't work trying both.

Step 1: You need to reset your keyboard - Do this by going to the menubar on your Mac (and going over to the bluetooth icon). Now using the wireless keyboard or your regular mac keyboard hold Option and Shift, then click the Bluetooth icon. Some interesting settings should pop up. All you have to do is left click on your wireless keyboard once and it should disconnect momentarily. Wait a few. seconds and it should re-connect. That's all you have to do. You've reset the wirless keyboard!

If that doesn't work, I also reset my network settings on my iPad. Now this means your device will forget the passwords to the wifi's you've been connected to, so this is not the optimal choice. I think the first step is the best solution, but I also gave this a try.

Step 2 (If Step 1 didn't work): Reset Network Settings - Settings>General>Transfer or Reset>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Go through with the process.

Finally connect to a network again and try Universal Control again. You may have to re-do Step 1.

Hope this helps! I had to go to an Apple Store to figure this out!

Hi YellowMonday,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We'd first suggest having a look at this article and double-checking all requirements have been met and toggling Universal Control off and back on: Universal Control: Use a single keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad.

Then if the issue continues, contact Apple Support for a deeper dive.

Have a fantastic day!

This issue just arose. Worked somewhat fine all these months, certainly without this CapsLock issue. Now its all over the place with Caps OFF. In fact, it worked fine an hour ago. Full Keyboard Accessibility on both devices, played around with all the settings as I had other issues prior. I am dumbfounded. Why is one of the largest tech companies in the world so bad with customer service?
