New iPhone 13 won’t let change from email address to phone number in iMessages.

Just purchased the iPhone 13: set it up today, finally got it activated to use iMessages, and it only will recognize my email address form my Apple ID, not my phone number. My phone number is listed under “you can receive messages to and reply from”.

However the phone will only allow me to check the email address, not the phone number. When I uncheck the email address, nothing happens.

when I toggle off iMessages and switch it back on, I get the iMessage Activation message, “An error occurred during activation. Try Again.”

I have tried the signing out of Apple ID, my number is never “greyed.” This applies to FaceTime feature as well.

very frustrating.

To activate iMessage and FaceTime using your Phone number

First, check to know whether you have an SMS plan enabled at least for One SMS*** with your carrier. Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider) the agency that issued the SIM to you

If your iPhone is used with a carrier not found in the wireless carrier articles, make sure you can send and receive international SMS. (One SMS*** Only)

If you can't turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime - Apple ...

*** You may not have an SMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS services.
