Can't get playlist XML files from iPhone.

This seems like it should be a simple problem but so far I have not found an answer.

My old Mac died and along with it my Apple Music (*not* subscription, just the app) library. I had all the music on an external drive, so the music isn't the problem, I was able to rebuild that all on my new Mac. The problem is the playlists. I still have them on my iPhone, but I can't seem to retrieve them. There are a few 3P apps that can copy the music files off the phone, but they don't actually copy the playlist order. All I need are the Playlist XML files, just as one would export them from iTunes or Music, but I can't do that because my new Mac isn't synced to my phone, and if I do sync, it will wipe all my playlists.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Hello ChrissyOne,

When moving music and playlists from your iPhone to your Mac, are you following these steps to do so: Connect your device to your Mac to sync Music content - Apple Support? If not, you may want to start there.

1. Connect your device to your Mac using a USB or USB-C cable.
2. Do one of the following:
• If it’s your first time connecting this device to your Mac: Open the Finder  on your Mac, click the device in the Finder sidebar, then click Trust; you may also need to tap Trust on the device.
• If it’s not your first time connecting this device to your Mac: In the Music app  on your Mac, click the device in the sidebar, then click Sync Settings in the top-right corner.
The device opens in the Finder  on your Mac.

Once the music is on the Mac, you can follow these steps to Save a copy of a playlist in Music on Mac - Apple Support.

We hope this information helps you out.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply Jeff, but unfortunately this doesn't work. Since my phone was connected to my old Mac, the only option is to wipe it and re-sync as a new device. I can click "Sync," but nothing really happens, the playlists don't come up under the phone listing, only the individual songs show up. I can't do anything but enable music sync which will rip everything that's currently on the phone.

I can't think of a way to do this, but you could consider doing screen shots of the playlist contents on your phone and using the text recognition of screen shots to get the song names as text as a note. You could then use a text editor on your mac to turn the raw text into an XML or maybe CSV file.

Not a very good workaround, I know.

It's a longshot, but could you sign up for iTunes Match on your Mac and get all your songs into iCloud that way. Then on your phone, turn on iTunes in the Cloud? There's some chance it would do sync the playlists to the cloud that way, then you would have them on your Mac.

The only way to do this is to sign up for Apple Music and I'm not going to do that. But I did find another way.

I used iExplorer by Macroplant software to extract the playlists and load them directly back into Music. This worked about 85% perfectly, in that some of the playlists were a little out of order. But after a bit of fixing I got them all back.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
