MacOS Photos "Locate referenced files" doesn't work

I need some advise. All my image files are referenced to a location on the same disk which works fine. I want to move some of them to another location and here I run into problems.

Once I move referenced files, the image overlay correctly changes to [?] as Photos can no longer see them. Clicking [?] correctly conjures up "Locate referenced files" (see screenshot) but clicking that doesn't do anything at all. Once I move back referenced files to their original location Photos sees them again.

How can I tell photos of the new location? I am aware Photos is poorly equipped for working with referenced files. But the feature to relink manually does seem to exist as this tread (here) points out but I'm unable to access that. I have tried it on a new user account, which produces an identical problem.

I am running Photos 7.0 on macOS Monterey 12.6.2.

"Locate referenced file" is not doing anything for me in the most recent version of Ventura". I Just checked again with a small test library. When I move a referenced file to an external volume or rename the file or any folder along the path, the "Locate" command is completely unresponsive and I cannot reconnect any file, if the path to the file has changed.

Even when "Locate referenced file has still been working, it did nothing but taking us to find the file on our own and we could reconnect it. There has not been any help for to search for the file, like Aperture had.

The best you could do is to move the library to a drive with enough storage, put the originals back where they used to be, then reconnect them to the moved library and consolidate them into the moved library.

Thanks, léonie, for checking this out. Among the options for redress I consider was upgrading to Ventura. Reading your post I am relieved I didn't rush into this.

I reckon that with the small number of files concerned in my case (<2000) reimporting seems a viable option, even though this means losing edits, faces and keywords and redoing them. The bigger question is though what photo manager/editor to migrate to in the future. I am not fond of paying forever though otherwise I would be happy to consider Lightroom if available as a one-time purchase. And with any non-subscription options, I have to content with knowing that one fine day they will stop working because of an OS upgrade. It looks I may soon fall into the subscription trap.

I understand that subscriptions can cause people to worry about open-ended relationships, but have you actually looked at what you get for $10 per month? You get LR Classic, LR (the Cloud version) plus Photoshop, as well as various add ons like an app for making easy websites. At $120 per year that compares very favourably with the days when LR Classic alone was 180 and Photoshop around 500. Plus, all these apps are always up-to-date.

Folks are also concerned with the notion of their work being trapped should they stop paying. Well in LRC you can no longer edit or use the map function, but the library function, including the ability to import and export, continues to work in perpetuity. If you use the Cloud version, you have an entire year to download your work from their servers. So lock in is just not an issue.

Now I'm familiar with the Adobe photography plan, but equally, the others - like CaptureOne and Mylio - will have similar safety valves, and should you choose those apps then of course you should familiarise yourself with the consequences of ending your subscription. On1 Photo Raw has both subscription and outright purchase options, DxO Photolab is purchase only - though like Luminar - its file management is its weakest link.

And with any non-subscription options, I have to content with knowing that one fine day they will stop working because of an OS upgrade.

If you really don't want the apps to stop working then don't upgrade the OS.

Thanks, Yer_Man. Even if I don't upgrade the OS, a new OS is as inevitable as is the purchase of a new laptops every 5 or so years. Considering Apple's apparent unwillingness to equip Photos with more robust tools, the question of migrating to other software is only a question of time. Your points provide good food for thought in that direction.
