hard drive mounts but nothing is there on 2017 macbook pro

I have an older external hard drive that I have been trying to access. It mounts fine but there's nothing visible, no folder structure, no files. Tried running FIrst Aid and getting an error.

Just for fun, I tried mounting this to a very old 2008 macbook and voila, mounts perfectly and I can see all the folders and files.

What's causing this drive to not mount on a newer 2017 macbook pro?
