My question is how to keep the group but clear the posts from the previous session? I use an iMac with OS 13.1, an iPhone 14 plus and an iPad 2

Dragging to select, like everywhere else in macOS.
It's not very easy in Messages, though. You have to start inside a message, then you can drag down to select. Or, you can select the top message, scroll to the bottom, then shift-click to select everything in between.
You should be able to select all of the messages and delete them. I don’t think there is a select all option, you just have to drag.
Barney, where are talking about dragging text to? Plus I have not been able to drag a message with my trackpad.
Barney, Apple tech support said that there was no solution. I will try what you suggest tomorrow after another group session. Thank you for your suggestion.
