Sony WH-1000XM4 stuttering in bluetooth mode after updating to MacOS 12.3

Have seen others post this exact issue. Happened since 12.3, continues on 13.1. My MacBook is the only device that causes this issue, windows laptop and android phone have no stuttering at all. Device is on latest firmware (2.5.0), please assist. This makes it basically unusable to use these headphones on Mac.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.5

Thanks for your reply. It appears the issue is caused by the Logitech triathlon bluetooth mouse I use with my MacBook. I have been using this mouse with my Sony headphones on my M1 Mac without issue until the issue started with a macOS update, circa 12.3

On my windows surface laptop I can use both without issue.

I suppose the best course is to find a wired or a different bluetooth mouse for Mac :(

We have thousands of Macs in use where I work and those Sony headphones are the primary full over ear headphones that are offered to us to use with the work computers. I have a set. Our Macs are all on 12.6.2 and 13.1 and the headphones seem to work very well without stuttering (with bluetooth). The leads me to suspect that there is something installed in your system that might conflict with the headphones normal operation. That would also be consistent with what you report about no problems with Windows or Android devices.

In addition to the good suggestion to start in Safe Mode and retest, you could download Etrecheck and run it and post the output here using the Additional text button below. Lots of experts can then go through that Etrecheck report (which provides only diagnostic information about your device, no identifying information, which you can check yourself before posting ... Etrecheck is also open source software, it has nothing to hide) and maybe see if there is something installed that might be interfering.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Jameselpoo,

If we understand your post correctly, the sound on your Bluetooth headphones stuttered since you upgraded to macOS Ventura. We’d like to help.

We'd like to suggest some steps to isolate or resolve the issue. You can skip any steps you've already tried. Test for the issue after each step.

  1. Forget the Bluetooth headphones and pair again.
  2. Restart your MacBook Pro
  3. Reset the SMC of your Mac
  4. Start in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac
  5. Log in with a different user account to see if this issue continues there.
  6. Run a diagnostic: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac
  7. Disable or remove any VPN you may be using.

Let us know if these steps resolve this issue for you.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

My WH-1000-XM4 headphones work correctly and without stuttering with their latest firmware applied via Sony's iOS Headphones Connect software. I use them on the following Macs, and they are configured on power to multi-home pair with the first two Macs in this list (if two Macs are on):

  1. M1 mini with Ventura 13.1
  2. M1 (16-in) MacBook Pro with Monterey 12.6.2
  3. 2020 27-inch iMac with Core i7 and Monterey 12.6.2

I would encourage you to do the folllowing:

  1. Install the Sony Headphones Connect software on your phone and verify that you have the last available firmware applied to the WH-1000-XM4 headphones.
  2. Power off the headphones and ensure that they are fully charged.
  3. Eliminate other sources of BlueTooth interference near your headphones and Mac.
  4. Update macOS Monterey to 12.6.2 (or 12.6.3 next week).
  5. After booting up Monterey, power on your Sony headphones and let them pair.
  6. Assess if the stuttering issue has been resolved.

That's a shame, maybe one of the MacOS updates changed the bluetooth configuration.

Do either the Sony device or the Logitech device have an option to change the bluetooth channel?

You might explore some of the options in this article:

At a minimum, you can certainly have your Mac "forget" all the Bluetooth devices and then re-pair them to see if that helps at all.
