Is Apple TV 4K Still "Wonky" With Dolby Atmos?

So I've been considering the purchase of a Sonos Arc sound bar for some time, but am now wondering if I need to rethink things?

My setup isn't complete yet for Dolby Atmos (I plan to upgrade my TV to one that supports this format), so I'm doing my "due diligence" now, rather than wait until AFTER I've bought the equipment.

My setup on the TV would be pretty basic: ATV would use an HDMI port, my cable box would use another HDMI port, and my DVD player would use another HDMI port. The Sonos would be plugged into the TV's HDMI eARC port (and there's only one of these on the TVs I've looked at). There's only one HDMI connection on the Sonos Arc.

Everything I'm reading tells me Apple TV 4K uses a Dolby Atmos codec (MAT) that many other devices don't play well with. I read one post here that said that both the sound bar and ATV need to be plugged into HDMI eARC ports for Dolby Atmos to work. I don't know of TVs that offer multiple HDMI eARC ports, so that's a non-starter. Another post I read suggested getting an external device that accepts multiple eARC devices and can switch between them...but this would involve clicks and button pushes my wife would definitely rebel against.

So I guess I'd ask here: Is an Apple TV 4K in this kind of setup still way too buggy for everyday use for someone who doesn't want to keep flipping between settings and input?

“Everything I’m reading is...” speculation and swag (scientific wild *** guessing). If you really want to do due diligence you will see that the Apple TV is among many devices that have been reported as having trouble with Dolby Atmos. Lots of people are having problems with sound bars, streaming boxes, and smart TVs other than the Apple TV. The possible combination of devices, cables, connections, settings, etc. is never ending.

Is the Apple TV still “Wonky”? No, millions of people, including myself are using it without any issues. Dolby Atmos works perfectly with no glitches, cutouts, or anything else. The hardware hasn’t changed, the software is the same, continues to be updated, and Apple has never indicated there is any basic issue.

Well, speaking about tone, your post assumed that the Apple TV is defective when it comes to Dolby Atmos when used the term “wonky”. Then you regurgitated the peculation flying around about the subject.

But I’ve been thinking about your proposed setup. You propose to go Apple TV ->HDTV -> Sound Bar via eARC. That assumes your TV will properly process the Dolby Atmos signal it gets from the Apple TV and send it back out the eARC channel to your sound bar. Are you sure your TV will do that? Does you TV’s manual say anything about Dolby Atmos?

If that causes a problem I would consider an HDMI splitter. Apple TV -> spitter -> one output to TV, one output to sound bar. Just a thought.

lkrupp, Thanks. The TVs I'm considering (Sony XR A80K, Sony XR X95K, and LG C2) all say they support Dolby Atmos. One user in the AVS forum said his setup with an LG C1, Apple TV 4K, and Sonos Arc works fine, but for the occasional times when he streams Netflix and he sees HD 4K on the screen, but it's actually Dolby Vision (so not really a problem).

Hcsitas, nice of you to assume I hadn't bothered investigating on the Sonos forums. Many of the posts there point the finger at the ATV4K sending an uncompressed Dolby Atmos signal with Atmos metadata...hence my original post. But as you've suggested, I think I'll let this topic die for now.

Not really. You said many others ARE experiencing Dolby Atmos issues with a variety of setups, but you aren’t (and haven’t).

I limited my research to Sonos Arcs and Apple TV 4K, as that’s the gear I would want to use Dolby Atmos with. Though I may have missed a couple of posts, I don’t recall anyone saying, in the forums I looked at, they’ve not had any issues at all. Your post is the first I’ve seen describing a trouble free experience. (I realize, of course, folks who’ve never had any issues may not even frequent the sites I looked at).

So no…not going to purchase the Arc…unless I can get something that can tell me that over 90% of users with the setup I’m looking into don’t have any issues with it.

A bit out of line. You referred to other setups, @lkrupp did too, admirably well if I may add.

That said, you’re asking for (demanding) an impossible, sweeping pre-sales answer about ATV workability, coupled with a threat not buy Sonos products. ??? To your credit, at least you didn’t ask it of a poor associate at an Apple Store.

Try Sonos support, that’s where it belongs. Or find out for yourself and return the unit within the window if it doesn’t suit your needs. Good luck!
