"Desktop" Keeps Disappearing from Finder "Favorites" Sidebar

This is a problem I've had for a few OS updates (Big Sur, if I remember correctly -- all the way to today's latest version of Ventura) where I have to manually add the "Desktop" to my Favorites sidebar (that opens alongside any window in the Finder). On occasion it will just disappear and I'll have to add "Desktop" again. Very frustrating. Anyone else experience this issue? Any fixes?

I have this same issue, and have for months. It was happening before the Ventura update, too. I have to manually add it back in every other day or so (Finder > settings > check Desktop (and documents, downloads, which also randomly disappear)

I will manually drag and drop it into the sidebar when it goes missing. In the Finder Settings I do have "Desktop" checked, along with everything else checked, except for "Recent Tags"... but it's just a matter of time before "Desktop" disappears from the sidebar (the settings will still show it as checked for inclusion in the sidebar). I've tried unchecking this box... rebooting... upgrading the OS... and rechecking... but nothing seems to work. Manually dragging it into the sidebar works... for a little while. It will eventually go away again. I'm wondering if there is any Terminal flag I can input that would force it to always be in the sidebar, regardless of checked status or anything else? Whenever I've seen issues in the past the UNIX/Terminal fixes usually work for the long haul.

I do NOT have Desktop and Documents set to backup to iCloud -- in fact, I resent that option when Apple introduced it and try to sneak it in for everyone to automatically start using (which would quickly burn up your online storage and prompt you to purchase more storage or risk losing all your documents -- which is more about how it was worded than what would really happen to your documents). I'm not saying that just to rant, I'm just saying it so you understand that I absolutely in no way would have ever allowed it. :)

I have my own Amazon S3 storage backup/cloud solution that I created a long time ago. I use this method for offsite storage (in addition to my two redundant 60TB NASs locally, for speed). I also hate that iPhone backups use similar strategies to try to trick people into purchasing more Apple storage. For example, my wife and I both get multiple warnings that our "storage limit is almost full" even though we have 30% capacity available. What really erks me about this is that Apple counts the base data of you applications against your storage capacity -- even though those applications are on the App Store and don't need to be 'backed up' to my personal storage. If something happens to my phone, re-downloading the base app is no an issue, and even if I reinstall the base app it is reinstalled from the App Store, not from my "storage". But, it eats up a lot of "space" so it appears that I'm using more cloud storage than I actually am. One of the many reasons I use my own backup solution (backing up everything to my local NAS as well as my Amazon S3 storage for PENNIES against the Apple dollar). Sorry... I know this has nothing to do with the original question, but this thread sparked a rant. :) Have a beer... cheers... and happy weekend!

The next time the Desktop goes missing from the Favorites section give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

OR you can just boot into Save Mode, reboot normally and see if the problem returns or not.
