MacBook Pro Retina 2014 crash

Random crashes with no single app running. I replaced worn out battery recently but the crashes predate that, crashing was one reason to replace batts. Screen goes black but keyboard and cover logo remain illuminated aprox 20 seconds. I've downgraded to Big Sur (11.7) but no difference. tried multiple browsers, tries uninstalling adobe helpers, canceled every extension.

Help, please

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.7

So far it seems more stable.

CleanMyMac is most likely the source of the problems. Anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizing apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac and usually causes more problems than they solve since they interfere with the normal operation of macOS.

Unsigned apps are not necessarily bad. It just means the developer is not paying for the privilege of having their apps install easily on macOS...users must jump through hoops to allow macOS to run an unsigned app. A signed app does not mean quality...CMM is a signed app and look at all the problems it causes as this forum is full of threads where CMM is the source of the problem (CMM is one of the most notorious apps).

macOS already has great built-in security especially when the user also practices safe computing habits such as those outlined in this excellent article written by a respected forum contributor:

Run the third party utility app EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. This report will help us assess your system.

After running & posting the EtreCheck report, try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

Also, try disconnecting all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

You spent the time and effort to create a detailed look inside your Mac using Etrecheck.

In my opinion, you should fix the most egregious items it found, that I pulled out for you above, and you may find stability is improved, or the symptoms may change.

The trouble files are in this folder:

/Library/Extensions

copy and paste that string into

Finder > Gon Menu > Go to Folder

the appropriate Extensions folder will open.

hunt down each of the items in the list from the Etrecheck report that I highlighted.

Drag each to Trash. Your admin password may be required.

You may not be able to empty the Trash until after a Restart.

¿what is the date of your last backup, and by what method?

You have 5x report of high CPU use in webkit networking, which might be explained away by visiting a site with too much or too sloppy web content or ads.

the only other crash is in Accounts, suggesting that your login accounts might be corrupted in some way. Or maybe 1Password has a problem. ¿are you using the absolute latest version of 1Password?

Your Mac is not crashing. The logs show three high CPU use in the last few days, and no panics

But I have never seen so many obsolete Extensions, indicating you have LOTS of obsolete software loaded, that without its kernel extensions could be causing major delays.

Kernel Extensions:
    /Library/Extensions
        [Not Loaded] FTDIKext.kext - com.FTDI.driver.D2XXHelper (Wacom Technology Corp., 1.0 - SDK 10.12)
        [Not Loaded] JMicronATA.kext - com.jmicron.JMicronATA (1.1.6)
        [Not Loaded] SiLabsUSBDriver64.kext - com.silabs.driver.CP210xVCPDriver64 (Wacom Technology Corp., 3.0.0d1)
        [Not Loaded] osx-pl2303.kext - nl.bjaelectronics.driver.PL2303 (1.0.0d1)

Thank you for the reply. I've run Apple diagnostics that found no issues. Ran Etre, it showed Safari using excess processor time (I'd switched to Safari after Chrome repeatedly crashed) —running Chrome again now.

Uninstalled some startup items per CleanMyMac and unsigned apps per Etre.

So far it seems more stable.

If no crashes will try updating OS back to whatever apple suggests.

If still having trouble will update this thread with Etre report, thanks again.

The problem predated loading CMM, I loaded it because of the problem. It is worthwhile finding abandoned parts, uninstalling unused stuff etc. Anyway, after deleting several startups and helpers from Adobe everything seemed fine for a day or 2 of browsing but with a few browser tabs open it is crashing again.

One item I've tried over and over to delete is drivers and parts for an ancient (ca. 1994) Wacom tablet that I actually used until recently. I've deleted a few, and found more recently with CMM but kernel extensions are still present... and I can't find them for the life of me.

Attaching the Etre report

Not sure what the technical definition of crash is but the machine shuts down without warning, the screen simply goes black and some seconds later the keyboard lights go out. Pressing the power key boots it up as normal. I did receive a cpu warning a couple of times after I started jiggering around deleting stuff, once while browsing, once when CCM was scanning but those are not the typical problem, which again is abrupt shut down, no fade, just straight to black.

I used this machine to run Adobe full-time for 5 or 6 years with various drives, printers, monitors, tablets attached, I'm not surprised there are leftovers and crumbs in the gears. Should I wipe it and reinstall? If so what OS should I run? 11.7 I believe is the latest Apple recommends or Update wants to load, I'd like to try and have Adobe CS loaded as a backup if possible, if it isn't the real culprit here that is. I actually had an iMac free the magic smoke on me a couple of years ago so a back up machine is always nice.

Thanks for the help

Above is a new report. After deleting the referenced files the random shut-downs continued.

I wiped the disk and reinstalled Big Sur and 1Password.

Random shut-downs continue.

It is possible they only happen when typing. I've started a log to make sure but I do know it has happened several times while either tapping BS into the aether or filling some type of form. Is it possible this is the SSD getting ready to fail? Hardware check and disk first-aid show nothing.

I don't backup this machine regularly. If I do something in Adobe while traveling etc I alway send to my email or main Mac ASAP. It is mostly a browser and backup hardware.

I did do a fresh install of 1Pass but it does have a 0.0.x update just now so maybe that will help.

I don't know what the login accounts refer to. Could you point me to a fix or check there?

Would it be worthwhile to down grade the OS? Perhaps even Big Sur is a step too far?
