Adding a esim to IPhone 13 Pro Max

I’m currently on my ex’s phone plan and we are not together. He is paying the bill but I want my own phone bill. The IPhone 13 Pro Max he bought and gave me is not sim locked, but it’s not paid off. Can I add a esim with a different carrier on this IPhone? Will my ex have access to my information since this phone’s information is on his plan? I really want to keep this phone, specially since he is paying for it. I just want my own phone number, so I don’t feel like I’m being monitored. Can I keep and use this IPhone? It’s not blacklisted and IMEI is clear.

If you feel an unauthorized person is remotely controlling or monitoring your device, then that is possible only if you have done one or more of the following Don'ts...

  1. Don't hand over an iPhone to kids or to a stranger without Enabling Guided Access
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jailbreak
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device
  5. Don't give in to Phishing
  6. Don't leave your iPhone unlocked and unattended in public places like offices, schools, malls etc.

Yes you can add multiple eSIMs on iPhone 13 Pro Max. But you can use only 2 eSIMs at any given time.

Your ex will not know of your SIM addition if you are sharing your Apple ID with your ex.

If you are using your ex's Apple ID then please go to

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > [Disable his device, your ex won't know]

For some odd reason I don’t have the “text message forwarding “ option in my message settings. I’ve tried several different occasions going to settings > messages > forwarding text messages and it simply isn’t there. But, we don’t share an Apple ID but I know for a fact he knows mine because, I borrowed his Chromebook before we split and everything I had viewed on my phone was somehow synced to his Chrome. His chrome icon was black not the usual red google chrome color. He said he had no clue what I was talking about, but he did. Also in my contacts on this IPhone 13 Pro Max on all of my routine calls had a “ under the contact information icon. Then it said started on one line and someone about secondary. I still haven’t figured out what that means, but as soon as I noticed it, it was gone back to normal.
