The answer to what the 3GS can do is "very little". Most apps will no longer run on the iOS system on this phone.

The phone was a 3G device and virtually all carriers have stopped providing 3G service, so don't expect the phone to work on a cellular network or on much else for that matter.

With luck, it might work on Wi-Fi

If the 3GS in in mint condition it won’t update to iOS 16 but it will run fine on an older os, I would just be careful what personal info you put on the phone since it is more easily hackable because it is running on an older os

It will still work over Wi-Fi, so you can use it like an iPod Touch. But there won’t be any apps available for it.

iOS 6.x would be about the max this phone could run.
