My wife has an iPad 10th generation. What charging cord would be best using our existing charging blocks for our iPhones (usb-a female) to charge the new iPad requiring usb-c?

The best Power Adapter and cable to charge the iPad10 are those with which it was shipped - the 20W USB-C Power Adapter and the USB-C to USB-C charging/data cable.

The iPad10 supports USB PD (Power Delivery) Fast Charging when connected to a compatible USB-C Power Adapter. If connected to a USB Type-A port, the maximum charging rate is reduced to 12W (2.4A @5V).

Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow.

Also be aware that many computer USB ports cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

Should you still wish to charge from a USB Type-A source, you will require a certified USB Type-A to USB-C cable. These are available from good computer stores - and Apple. Here is one example marketed by Apple:

  • mophie USB-A Cable with USB-C Connector (1 m)

Any Lightning to USB-A cable should work just fine.

I prefer Ugreen, Anker or even Amazon Basics branded cables:

Do note, the iPad requires more power than an iPhone to properly charge, so the small 5 watt chargers that came with iPhones in the past, will not provide enough power to charge the iPad, and will take a really long time to charge it, and may not charge it at all while its being used.

If you have a 10 watt or higher USB-A charger, that will work better.
