Recovery Key

Long story short… I thought I was hacked and in a hurry, late at night, sleep deprived, I started writing my recovery key out then… had a “brilliant” idea to copy and paste my recovery key into notes and email to myself and signed out… sent it to my iCloud email… and now I don’t remember iCloud password and can’t get back in and am locked out.

Apparently I’m an idiot. But is there really NO way to regain a locked account without a recovery key?

That seems incredibly over zealous considering how many people could make the same mistake I did. Literally every. single. thing in my life and history was on there and I did it to myself, I wasn’t hacked. Can’t I send them proof of purchase and identity and regain the lost Appleid?

I was encouraged to use icloud as my backup…and… now everything is gone because one little error of judgement? I’m so upset. Are there any plans to fix this issue in the future? I know I’m not the only human out there who makes mistakes… or… Is there some way to regain my appleid I don’t know about? Some waiting period or application? I don’t want to give up on my account yet.

Hi Sadkenny,

Do you happen to have access to a trusted device? If so, then you can use these steps to reset your Apple ID password: If you forgot your Apple ID password

Reset your Apple ID password on your iPhone or other trusted Apple device

1. Go to Settings.
2. Tap your name > Password & Security > Change Password.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.
Change your password in Settings on iPhone

You can also follow this process on a trusted iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch.

To reset your password on your trusted Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings (or System Preferences) > Sign in with your Apple ID (or Apple ID). Then click Password & Security, Change Password, and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you don't have access to a trusted device or your recovery key, you could be locked out of your account permanently. There's more information in this resource: How to generate a recovery key.

Using a recovery key is more secure, but it means that you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently. With that in mind, it's important to keep your recovery key in a safe place. You might want to give a copy of your recovery key to a family member, or keep copies in more than one place. That way you always have your recovery key when you need it.

Regards.
