MacOS Ventura login items list limited to 3

I am having a strange issue on MacOS Ventura (13.1 currently 13.2; update dit not cure the issue on MacBookPro M1 max): the list of login-items at startup is limited to 3.

When I use the '+' to add another item it simply is not added to the list.

I tried to delete the login-playlist but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

See screendump below, never mind the OS language is Dutch.

Create a new user account for testing. Try to add 4 or more Login Items there.

I just tried this on my own system and I was able to add more than 3 items. The size of the list expanded with each new item after 3.

You may have a corrupt preferences file, which can be easily corrected. I recommend adding the login items that you want in the test account. If it works there, then you can just copy over that preferences file. In the meantime, I will try to track down exactly what file that is. Hopefully someone else will beat me to it.

Adobe tends to do things their own way. Their apps may not be recognized as apps by this Login Items window.

You could try write a little Automator script that launches them. The Login Items tablet should recognize these scripts. You may not even have to save them as applications, but runnable application scripts would definitely work.

It remains really weird, all Adobe app have the .app extension so that is not different.

That's just 4 characters. What's inside is what is important.

Writing an automator script: well yes I'll look into that but I assume the preference panel in MacOS is just that:-)

It is less than that, I'm afraid.

An Automator script isn't too hard. You can use the older "Script Editor" too. It could be something as simple as:

tell application "Adobe Photoshop"
   activate
end tell

I don't have Photoshop so that name may be wrong, but that's all you need.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprise the Operating System

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac

Read some of the posting and arrive at your own conclusions.

Specific to CMM ( CleanMyMac ) aka " BrickMyMac "

Some Contributors suggest restarting in Recovery Mode and choosing to Reinstall the Operating System over  the existing installation.

This may or may not replace elements of the Entire Operating System including the Home Folder ( User Account )  and replace any corrupted or removed elements of the Operating System and make thing right.

Then there are Other Contributors ( like myself ) would suggest  from this link Use Disk Utility to erase a Mac with Apple silicon.

For Intel computer >> Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac followed by How to reinstall macOS

Thereafter to start from scratch and install all Required Application directly from the Apple Apps Store or Directly from the Developer.

If going this route - I suggest Not using Startup Assist to migrate things back as this will probably Re-Introduce the existing  issue that existed when the TM Backup was made

Based upon the first 600 of maybe 2000+ posting specific to "BrickMyMac " the quirk the user refers to maybe a Self Inflicted Quirk

As there is really no additional positive suggestions to add, to what has already been mentioned >>

In this case I believe you are incorrect. The above menu is supposed to add apps of your own choice that you would like to open at startup. The list below this login menu item contain the start-up actions apps requested for.

See screendump attached 'allow these applications in the background’:

Hi, I tried that just before you replied.

In my new test-account the list was also limited. It refuses to add Illustrator and Photoshop whereas InDesign and the two other apps are able to be added.

The list refuses to expand beyond 3 entries.

All in all: I think something is wrong, but what to do to solve it…

Hi P.

Thanks for your help. But you are still referring to the apps that are allowed in the background; I switched off Cleanmymac. But that is in the second part of the login pref pane.

My initial question is about the top section: I want to add several apps (InDesign, Illustrator/Photoshop and what're) to my startup list so I don't have to manually start them every morning.
