Why does playing music on my HomePod pause music on my daughter's iPhone?

Whenever I play music on my HomePod it causes the music playing on my daughter's iPhone to pause. This happens even if she's miles away. The same has happened with the iPhone of my daughter's friend. My HomePod uses a different Apple ID for music than my daughter's iPhone and her friends.

Can anyone explain why this happens and how to stop it?

Understood colinjoss,

Based on that alert, it does sound like you only have an individual Apple Music plan. While you can be in a Family Sharing plan to share purchases, for Apple Music you must also have an Apple Music Family subscription. Otherwise, only one device can access Apple Music at a time. The link previously provided outlines how to access that subscription.

If you do have an Apple Music Family subscription and this pausing is ongoing, then we'd recommend you contact Apple Support so they can look into this further with you.

Thanks for reaching out colinjoss,

It sounds like you're having trouble playing music on more than one device at a time. We can help.

From what you've described, it could be the type of Apple Music subscription driving the behavior. If this is an individual plan, then only one device can play music at a time. This is to prevent anyone from sharing an individual Apple Music subscription with another person.

If you'd like to both be able to access Apple Music at the same time, you will want to set up a family share group and upgrade the plan to an Apple Music family subscription: Get an Apple Music family subscription.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
