iPad video output

Is it possible to stop the iPad from outputting black when there is no video. I want to use the output via lightning and a HDMI converter to wake up a projector when a video is played and then, when the video stops, the projector goes to sleep. The projector will do this when it sees or doesn’t see a source on its HDMI input the problem I’m having is the iPad constantly outputs black when not playing video etc?
