Ventura and Safari 16.1 has no video, only audio on the majority of video streaming channels

This was something I had asked before, but all the trouble shooting suggestions to date were not effective in resolving the issue.

I had added a second monitor to my IMAC of lower resolution, which when I used Safari to stream Netflix, Prime TV or other streams, it would only play the video content for about 3 seconds and then only the audio would work even though I was watching the video on the IMAC's screen. Note, it would play the brief previews, but not the content.

So, by removing the second monitor Safari 16.2 now works with all streaming. Firefox 109 had no difficulty using both monitors, so I expect a change in the new Safari app is the issue.

Thanks

Hey there markbpcmac,

The first thing we wanted to provide was a link to submit feedback you'd like for Apple to consider: Product Feedback

As you've already narrowed it down to only occurring in Safari, and only while using an external display. We understand you have no issue with using the Firefox browser when the external display is connected. Moving forward with troubleshooting this, we want to rule out some other possible causes, along with confirming more details to better understand what's happening:

  1. If there was a time when all streaming services worked without any issues in Safari while the external display was connected, when did this first start?
  2. Have you already tried clearing your Safari history, then testing for the same issue afterwards? If not, you can clear your history by clicking at the top under Safari > Clear History... > Clear All History.
  3. Are you able to test a different external display with your Mac to see if the same issue occurs in Safari for the affected streaming websites?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  5. If you're using a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.2. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!
