Unable to create an authorized user for an external drive.

I've been able to create a bootable drive, but am unable to add an authorized user. When I select the external drive as start up I get "Startup Disk - Startup Disk is trying to unlock the Startup Disk settings. Enter your password to allow this." I enter my password and click UNLOCK. Then I get the following "This volume does not have any authorized users for this computer." I select Authorize User... which is followed by "Please enter the password for the user" I enter my password and click OK. "Select an owner." I click Authorize then get "Please enter the password for the user" and SO IT GOES.

I am never able to add an authorized user!

Consequently I cannot add RAID software to my external drive which is vital to recovering from an internal disk failure.

What is your mac model? In recent macs you have to adjust the settings in Startup Security Utility to allow booting from an external drive.

Restart in Recovery, select Startup Security and lower the setting. You will probably get a warning about security and such, that is ok.
