I was hoping someone could explain why the Roman numeral for 4 in the California watch face is incorrect?

It is shown as IIII whereas it should be IV.

thanks.

What you're seeing is actually NOT incorrect. This face borrows on watch faces through the centuries and many many watch faces on many high end watches have the time for 4 listed as IIII. This is classic and time honored for watch faces. Bottom line is, Apple didn't make a mistake.

This is a really good article, which explains why it is this way on more watches than not --> https://www.watchmaster.com/en/journal/stories-en/roman-numeral-iiii-on-watches

HI Grace2211,

thank you for your response, it appears I wasn't accurate in my description on the watch face and I apologise for that. Whilst the watch face comes under the collective name of "California" the exact watch face name is "Roman".

As you can see the numerals are all intended to be depicted as Roman numerals but the numeral four (4) is depicted as "llll" where as the correct numeral should be depicted as "lV".

This appears to be a massive oversight and can lead to multiple generations being mislead as to the basics of an entire nomenclature used worldwide.
