Double-Receiving Messages as iMessage/SMS

With at least one iPhone user’s contact in my phone, I’ll receive most of their messages as both iMessage and a text message, one after the other. It’s happened on a variety of Wi-Fi networks (home, work, public) and even when we both have strong Wi-Fi connections. Does anyone know why I would keep receiving two versions of the same message, one as iMessage and one as text? I have an iPhone 13 Pro and iOS 16.2.

Hello gnr129,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

Does this only seem to happen with one specific contact or does it happen with multiple?

If this is only happening with that specific contact, it's likely that something is happening on their end. Possibly an issue with their connection, or a setting.

Apple recently released iOS 16.3. If you follow these steps to update do you still experience this same issue? Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Testing that can help further narrow down what's happening.

Cheers!
