SMTP Server Settings

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro (2016) MacOS Monterey version 12.6.2. I got this error when trying to send mail:

Mail was unable to connect to server “p13-smtp.mail.me.com” using SSL on the default ports. Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.

Would someone help me out; I tried to figure it out myself, but I couldn't. I'm a senior citizen who is usually able to figure things out. This has stumped me. Thanks community!

Hey there NolaLady56,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Here are the settings for your iCloud Mail server:

SMTP information for the outgoing iCloud Mail server
Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
SSL Required: Yes
If you see an error message when using SSL, try using TLS or STARTTLS instead.
Port: 587
SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: Your full iCloud Mail email address (for example, johnappleseed@icloud.com, not johnappleseed)
Password: Use the app-specific password that you generated when you set up the incoming mail server.

Complete server settings are listed in the Apple Support article:

NolaLady56,

Thanks for that great description of what you did. We see that it's still not working. We'd like to go about this another way.

Go ahead and check the following setting to ensure that iCloud is listed correctly:

If you receive an alert when you send a message from your @icloud.com email address using Mail on your Mac

If you see an alert that says “This message could not be sent. It will remain in your Outbox until it can be sent.", make sure that iCloud is your Outgoing Mail Account.

  1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences (or Settings).
  2. Click the Accounts tab.
  3. Select your iCloud email account.
  4. Click the Server Settings tab. If iCloud isn't listed as the Outgoing Mail Account, select iCloud. If you choose Edit SMTP Server List, you won't see your iCloud account listed as an option.

Let us know if that helps.

Take care!

Hi ArmMan 1016,

Thank you for replying to my message.

I went to Mail > Preferences > Accounts & it showed iCloud IMAP in the box to the left, & Outgoing Mail Account was NONE. I used the pull down menu & sa:

iCloud (offline)

IMPAP (offline)

So I clicked on Edit SMTP Server List.

Under Server Settings:

Description (What should I enter there? I left it blank.

User Name (I entered my email address)

Password (I entered my email password)

Host Name (Is this the same as the server name? I entered smtp.mail.me.com)

Automatically Manage Connects--left blank

Port (I entered 587)

Use TLS/SSL (Do I check that box?)

Authentication (choices are:)

  • External (TLS Client Certificate)
  • Kerberos Version 5 (GSSAPI)
  • NTLM
  • MD5 Challenge-Response
  • Password

If under authentication I select password, which password is it--my email password or my Apple ID password or some other password?

After I tried those settings it came back still with Outgoing Server Settings None.

I did notice that there were 3 different servers, I think:

iCloud

IMAP

SMTP

I tried the Connection Doctor & he said this:

Account Name iCloud

Account Type IMAP

Details "Connection and login to server succeeded."

So I tried to send another message. This time I got this error message:

Could not connect to this STMP server. Check your network connection & that you entered the correct information in the Account Preferences. Also verify that the server accepts connections on port 587. If it does not, change the port number in the Server Settings tab of Account preferences."

Now it shows 3 servers, all offline:

iCloud

IMAP

SMTP

ArmMan 1016, what is going on? Do you need to see the mail logs? Thank you for answering.
