I am in a large iMessage group. I’ve been in this group for over a year. It has always been iMessage. Someone left the group and all of a sudden I can only respond with MMS. I still receive messages from the group as iMessage but when I reply it will only send as SMS and it starts a new group for everyone else. I’ve tried restarting iMessage, my phone, and turning off SMS messaging.

Did you turn off iMessage on your phone?
You can check by going into the Settings (gear icon), then scroll down to Messages and click on it.
You'll see a slider for iMessage. Is it green? If not, toggle it on.
If you can create and send a brand-new iMessage to one of your friends right now, then this is probably not the issue.
Experiment with a group of your friends with iPhones. Start a brand-new group thread just for this test. Does it work without issues? If so, there's got to be something up with the other group thread.
If someone in the group had an iPhone earlier and has switched to an Android device using the same Phone number then the iMessage Group will automatically change to Group MMS / Group SMS.
