Google maps not staying active in background

iPhone 11, iOS 16.2.

This is an issue happening to lots more users on different iPhone models too.

Fairly recent for me, 2-3 months I think.

If I’m using Google Maps for something, whether that’s to view a route or to browse restaurants in the area, and then switch to other apps for more than 30 seconds (this has been checked by several people to be specifically 30 seconds), when I switch back to Google Maps I find that it’s refreshed itself (as if I had killed it and reopened it), so I have to re-start whatever search I was doing.

This is especially annoying if I’m on the underground with no signal and I need to check what stop to get off at etc.

Tried all the usual things - reinstalled the app, restarted phone, reset location/privacy settings, turned background app refresh on.

Any advice?

much love

iPhone 11
