one quick check is to restart into safe mode.
"works in safe mode, fails in regular mode" implies "It's something you added."
Another debugging step is to do an SMC reset. On Apple-silicon Macs, that's done by removing power, completely powering off, waiting a minute, then powering back on.

shine a bright light at the display to check for data present, but no backlight.
Did that. Theres backlight but no data. Looks like the screen is gone.
