IMac 2019 27” Won’t Wake from Sleep

Hi all - it’s been a frustrating day as my hitherto flawless iMac has decided to be problematic.

The machine for some reason does not now wake up from sleep mode, and to get it operational, I need to unplug the power cord from wall socket for around 20 secs and then put plug back into wall socket - the Mac then powers on, without the need to engage the button on the rear of the screen.

Research into the issue has thrown up a few possible fixes, including OS re-install but nothing works.

After 30 secs of sleep, the machine just dies.

Using Ventura 13.2 and all garbage from the machine has been emptied in terms of old files etc.

I’m thinking I may have a power supply issue inside the Mac.

Anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks.

Removing the power cord from the back of the Mac before it would boot with the Power button is a sign of a failing power supply. The next time it happens first try to reboot with the Power button. If that fails unplug the power cable from the back of the Mac for about 10-15 seconds. Plug it back in and try the Power button again. If that works it's a power supply issue. I went thru the same think with a 2015 iMac a couple of years ago.

If that's the case make sure you have a full and current backup of your boot drive. If you take it in for service the tens will want to erase the drive completely and install a fresh system without any user files to confirm it's a hardware problem and not a software one.

In the meantime you can just not put it to sleep. Just use the screen saver and then shut down at night which will also help performance as it clears out temporary system and application cache and swap files.

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

Update on this ongoing problem.

I managed to get the machine to a Glasgow store, who kept it for a week, ran some tests, reinstalled Ventura said it was fixed and sent it back to me.

But the fault is still there.

When machine is left in sleep mode, it won’t wake up and I have to pull out power cable and remove from wall socket to allow a re-start.

I have to comment that the folks in the store whilst pleasant and helpful to a degree, really don’t know what they are doing.

Very frustrating.

Looks like problems are escalating with my failure to wake from sleep issue.

Tried to update Mac OS yesterday and during the process the machine just shut down.

I had to remove power cord both from machine and wall socket for the it to re-start (without the update).

According to one of the reports I read via the monitor/console, the failure is - failure code:: 0x00000000 0x0000001f

A quick scan of this forum (and others) suggests that it's a known issue but no fix.

So, am I condemned to having the Mac with the sleep mode and no further OS updates?

Frustrating does not cover it!!!

Thanks.

When I first took the machine to the store, which is a real pain, it was mooted that the power supply could be an issue, but the Genius guys who had it for a week ruled this out.

Your suggestion as to the root of the problem being the power supply has some merit though as there is anecdotal evidence that for others it was an issue.

The guys at the store wiped the drive, reinstalled the OS and returned it to me claiming it was fixed.

It’s not.

To keep taking the machine back to the store is a right hassle so I guess I’ll need to live with it until it eventually gets worse.

I have to say that I’m disappointed with the help Apple have given.

For a so-called premium product that has only lasted 3 years fully operational the back up is poor.

As an Apple fanboy, I can’t say I’m impressed.

Anyway, not a lot I can do.

Appreciate the feedback.
