Can the new apple watch unlocked be used with Tracfone? I currently have a Tracfone plan that uses Verizon as a carrier.

I see Verizon, but nothing about Tracfone. I suggest you ask them.

Apple Watch on a different carrier than the iPhone My carrier (Mint Mobile) do not support Apple Watch. Getting a Watch LTE tied up to the same phone number, I would need to switch carriers for the whole family. That would be both expensive and a huge hassle. Can I have the watch on a different carrier? T-mobile offers $5 / month watch only plan. If I would sign up with that, what are the downsides compared to having the watch on the same operator?

Several have asked if Tracfone supports Apple Watch. They don't. This is unfortunately, what happens when you go with budget providers. You can use any Apple Watch as a GPS only watch, meaning you just can't add cellular service to the watch unless you move your cellular plan to a carrier who supports Apple Watch.
