Under Step 2, you'll find:

To preview an item before purchasing, move the pointer over the item, then click the Preview button.

You should be able open the Music app on your Mac to preview songs in the iTunes Store and play a portion of a song without any issue. Purchasing a song, or a specific version of a song, is entirely up to you.

If you're having an issue playing previews for songs in Music on your Mac, what exactly happens when you try? The more details you provide, the better we'll understand what you're asking.

Sure. On iPhone, just tap the song title and a preview will play.
