Ethernet connection through monitor

Hi everyone,

I have been experimenting with ethernet the past few days. I currently have a 2020 MacBook Air and it's connected via USB-C to Apples recommended LG Ultra-fine monitor. I have just the one cord going into my Mac and I would LOVE to keep it that way. I found out that the building I am in is in fact running ethernet through the wall (no clue how that all works, but as long as it's working it's cool with me).

Anyway, I really want to connect ethernet to my computer but don't want to have to use both USB-C ports on the computer that way the second port can stay open for charging my mouse and keyboard, and other things when needed. I also take the laptop off the monitor a lot so it's just a lot easier to only unplug one cord.

A few days ago I wanted to see if the ethernet did in fact work, so I plugged in a USB-C to ethernet adapter to the Mac directly and its been working great. My internet is 4x faster than it was with just wireless. Awesome.

So then I wanted to figure out if I could plug a USB to ethernet into the LG monitor and see if the Mac would pick up the signal. I found out that it does in fact work after scouring eBay for one because Apple's in sold out and most likely to never go back in stock. I was stoked, this meant only one cable directly to the Mac again, however, the internet speed is just the same as wireless speeds so at that point it's not really worth it anymore. I found out that the USB-C offer up to 1000base where the standard USB offers up to 100base.

My monitor has two USB ports and one USB-C port that has video, audio, and power all combined and that's what I use for the Mac. Does anyone know if theres some spitter of sorts that I could plug in to make it USB-C to USB-C and Ethernet. That way I have have my computer plugged in as normal but also plug in a USB-C to Ethernet and plug in the ethernet to that.

Or can you turn a USB port into a USB-C port with like a USB to USB-C female? I did see a USB-C to two USB-C female ports, but not sure if it can be split like that and will still charge the Mac.

Would something like this work?

Or I could plug this into the one USB-C port on the monitor. Then plug in the USB-C that charges, video, and audio to the mac and then plug in the USB-C to ethernet adapter?

I just really want to use an ethernet cable plugged into the monitor and not my Mac and I can, but it's not nearly as fast as the one plugged into the Mac.

Any thoughts?

I have figured out the issue! After searching for some kind of USB-C spitter. I stumbled across just normal USB to Ethernet adapters and actually read the description. It seems that Apples USB to ethernet adapter only gets up to 100mbps whereas other adapters get much higher, up to 1gbps.

I order a different adapter and will update here tomorrow if it works through the monitor with speeds as high as going directly through the Mac.

Hello Camille_Powell,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you may have found the faster connection option already by connecting the ethernet cable directly to your Mac.

If you decide to connect to your display instead, it is suggested to use Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter. Please know that your display or adapters may have Ethernet speed limitations. Please contact the display or adapter manufacture to confirm this.

However you decide to connect please be sure to follow this Apple Support article: Connect your Mac to the internet using Ethernet

Please reply back if you have any additional questions.

Cheers!
